B.A - Natya

About The Course

INCEPTION

  • The Department of Natya was established in the year 2005 with the guidance of Padma Bhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam. 
  • This Department offers a five year integrated M.A course, which can be pursued either as B.A. (Natya) UG course (Three years) or an integrated M.A. (Natya) PG course (Five years). 
  • This is the only college in Chennai offering this kind of integrated holistic degree course on Natya. 

OBJECTIVE

  • M.A. Natya degree is structured to provide a strong foundation in Natyasastra and to offer a holistic knowledge on the theory and practice of 108 Karanas. 
  • To gain in-depth knowledge on core subjects like Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam, Drama and allied subjects like Yoga, Philosophy, History, Temple architecture, etc. 
  • To inculcate the tradition of Guru parampara to the students along with the importance of professional approach towards the art form.
  • To emphasize and mold the students into holistic artistes & to perform, teach and conduct nattuvangam with confidence.
  • To source them with workshops by senior & experienced personalities from different art fields and to conduct certificate courses to improve their technical skills.
  • To create awareness about the opportunities around them and to provide platforms for their performance in sabhas & temples and to enable exposure through media.
  • To improve the overall potential of the students and make them  reach high standards in the art field.

SYLLABUS (5 years Integrated )

  • Natya degree course has a combined syllabus of Theory and Practice of Dance, Music and Theatre. 
  • In addition, English and Languages like Tamil, Sanskrit, French and Hindi are offered for B.A. Natya. Soft skills like Quantitative Aptitude, Essentials of English language, Computing skills, Personality enrichment are offered for both B.A. and M.A. students. 
  • Apart from this, as Non-Major Elective, students are offered Basic Tamil, Advance Tamil, Epics & Puranas and Nattuppuraviyal.

PRACTICAL TRAINING

  • Dance- Natyasastra exercises, Adavus, Margam, 108 Karanas, Nattuvangam and Choreography.
  • Music- Basic training of Varisais, Alankaram, Geetam, Varnam and singing the items learnt in Bharatanatyam. 
  • Theatre-Basic exercises, Voice Culture, Acting, Play production.
  • Yoga- Asanas, Pranayama, Mudras, Teaching Methodology.
  • Folk- Traditional folk music & dance forms.
  • Project - Research documentation of common & rare art forms.
  • Internship- Sound & Lighting, Costumes & Stage Designing, Media management.

SEMINAR

  • On 6th & 7th December 2019- A National seminar on ‘Performing Arts- Texts and Readings’ was organised.

  • September 2019- Y.G.Madhuvanthi , Director of Maham delivered a talk on Tamil Theatre.

WORKSHOP

  • October 2019- Theatre Workshop by Y.G.Madhuvanthi and troupe.

  • November 2019- Tamilnadu Folk dances, practical training by M. Madhan.
  • January 2020- Paraiattam,  practical training by Velu Asan.
  • February 2020- Kuchipudi,  practical training by Kalaimamani Sailaja.

STUDY TOUR

  • 05.08.2019- Students were taken for a study tour to visit 108 Karana sculptures at Bharata Shrine, Pattipulam organized by BIFAC.

  • 17.09.2019- Students visit to Kalakshetra to witness Shanti Sutra Dance drama

  • 02.12.2019 – Attended Seminar convened by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and organised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) in association with BIFAC at Kalakshetra.

CLUB ACTIVITY

  • September 2019- Heritage club organized a festival of South Indian traditions.

INTERNSHIP

  • November 2019- Students worked on the Sound & Lighting for Dramas with the Theatre of Maham

  •  S.Deepanjali won 2nd place in the Classical dance competition during the  Intercollegiate Fest held at St. Thomas College.
  • S.Suganya, E.S. Monisha, R. Anitha, P.Harini, S.Malarvili, S.Vidya, won the 3rd place in group dance competition during the  Intercollegiate Fest held at St. Thomas College.
  • S.Suganya, E.S. Monisha, R.Anitha, P.Harini, S.Malarvili, Subalakshmi, P.Poorna, S.Subika, won the 1st place in group dance competition during the  Intercollegiate Fest held at Anna Adarsh college, .
  •  S.Suganya, E.S. Monisha, R.Anitha, P.Harini, S.Malarvili, P.Poorna, S.Subika, Subalakshmi, won the 2nd place in group dance competition during the  Intercollegiate Fest held at Gurunanak college, Velachery.
  •  Dyuthi Aswin won the 2nd place in nail art competition held at Gurunanak college, Velachery.
  •  Dyuthi Aswin secured 1st prize on Wealth out of waste in the Inter- Departmental competition.
