About The Course

INCEPTION

The Department of Biochemistry was instituted in 1996.

OBJECTIVE

  • B.Sc. Biochemistry is an inter-disciplinary subject fulfilling the need for basic as well as applied aspects of biology. Biochemists focus on the role, function, and structure of biomolecules. 
  • This course emphasizes on the biological processes which take place in cells and organisms. We also strive to create a biologically ethical, safe environment for the society. 
  • It prepares the student to become entrepreneur, teacher, researcher and to equip themselves to the future needs along with the basic and applied knowledge of modern biology and in turn contribute to the welfare of the society.
  • The department is working to enrich and strengthen the young talents by producing competent students to excel in research and consultancy in Biochemistry. 
  • In order to incorporate values beside classroom teaching the students are exposed to ample opportunities like, interaction with leading industries, project work, participation in debate, seminar, quiz, paper presentation etc.

Activities for the academic year 2019-20

CERTIFICATE COURSE

  • The Department offers a 20-hour course on Computational Biology for second year students.

SEMINAR

  • A National Seminar on “Towards Healthy Living” was held on 9th September 2019. The seminar was inaugurated by Mr. C. Jayaprakash, Technical Officer, Food Engineering and Packaging Division, Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), Mysuru.

WORKSHOP

  • Workshop for revision of curriculum for B.Sc Biochemistry degree, University of Madras was held at our College on 9th January 2020. Faculty from other colleges participated and valuable inputs were given to the university.

GUEST LECTURE

  • Dr. Uma Sundaram, MD, Vice Dean, Chairman, Dept. of Clinical & Translational Sciences, Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, Marshall University, Huntington spoke on research in the field of biochemistry, microbiology and clinical trials.

  • A Guest lecture on “Awareness of stem cell therapy” was given by Mr.Venkateswaran, Jeevan stem cell foundation, Chennai on 17th December 2019


GREEN HEALTH CLUB

Activities of “The Green health club” was inaugurated on 5th July 2019 by Ms.Gomathi, Ornithologist, Adyar Eco-park, Chennai.



  • UG students of various departments visited the Tholkappiar Poonga, an ecological park .

STUDENT ACTIVITY

  • Students participated in the competition based on Presentation of charts on Nutrient rich foods . 
  • Participated in the competition - Chart and model presentation on healthy living . 
  • To inculcate the importance of green environment in the minds of students, an Inter Department Collage competition about Environmental issues was held..


  • To create awareness on Disaster management among all the II UG students, series of competitions like the following were held.

  • Oratorical talk in English and Tamil (Management of man-made and natural disasters)  


FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS

  • R.Padmini has published an article titled “ Molecular docking studies of organosulfur compounds and flavonoids of Allium sativum against EGFR to treat Non-small cell lung cancer” in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and research,  2019, Vol 10(9):4186-4193.ISSN.NO.2320-5158.
  • Dr. M.Durga  has been selected for “InSc Research Excellence award 2020” awarded by the Institute of Scholars (InSc) registered under Ministry of MSME, Government of India for the outstanding research work in the field of Nanotechnology.
