About The Course

INCEPTION

Post Graduate Department of Applied Microbiology was instituted in the year 2004

OBJECTIVE

To ensure that students earning the M.Sc degree are able to complete a substantial research project related to microbiology, seek and employ insights from others in implementing the project, evaluate a significant challenge in the project in relation to core concepts, methods or assumptions in microbiology and capable of enriching practical skills through learning inside and outside the classroom.

The stock of around 300 books, is ideal to fulfil the immediate requirement of students with respect to the syllabus prescribed.

LABORATORY FACILITIES

  • The strength of the department lies in the comprehensive laboratory utilizing advanced technologies and equipped processes. 
  • The department has well furnished air conditioned lab with Computer System, ELISA Reader, PCR, UV Spectrophotometer, UV Transilluminator, Soxhlet Apparatus, Phase Contrast Microscope& Dark Field Microscope etc.
  • Our full-fledged laboratory facility aims to provide R&D activities & encourage “Academia – Industry” interaction. We have collaborated with Cavin care & Dr. JRK Pharma & Cline Rise Pharmaceuticals, Chennai to create scientific knowledge and obtain industrial data.
  • The department takes great pride in maintaining a well-developed animal house in accordance with the norms of CPCSEA, Animal Welfare Division, Government of India.

A Report of the activities of 2019-2020

  • National Seminar - The Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Bioinformatics and Clinical Trial Management organized a National Seminar on “Towards Healthy Living” on 9th September 2019.It was inaugurated by Mr. C. Jayaprahash, Technical Officer, Food Engineering and Packaging Division Defence Food Research Laboratory, Mysuru

GUEST LECTURE

  • Dr. T. Bakyaraj, CEO Nero Lab India Infection Control Specialist delivered a talk on “Hospital Infection Control” .
  • Mr. Sam Bristow, Deputy Manager Quality at Scientific Food Testing services Pvt Ltd,Aachi Masala Foods Pvt Ltd Chennai. He delivered a lecture “Career Perspectives in Food Microbiology” .

INDUSTRIAL VISIT

  • I M.Sc students visited the Center for Laboratory Animal Technology and Research - Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology on 6th September 2019.
  • II M.Sc microbiology students visited Adyar poonga on 23rd July 2019. They learned about mangrove ecosystem, desalination using Mangrove plants, uses of medicinal trees and its application

DEPARTMENT MAGAZINE

As another feather to its crown, the department of Microbiology is proud to have a Journal Club “EUPRO”, a platform to exchange ideas to experience translational moments and annually releases a newsletter by name, “SukshmaJivaVidya” which is a compilation of academic activities & ongoing research projects of the department and scientific events across the globe.

ASSOCIATION ACTIVITY

  • A guest lecture was organized for the students to celebrate the National Science Day celebration. Scientific talk was given by Dr. T. Bakyaraj, CEO Nero Lab India Infection Control Specialist delivered a talk on “Hospital Infection Control”

  • The department of microbiology inaugurated Microbiology association meet “Microcosm”. The inaugural address was given by Mr. Sam Bristow, Deputy Manager Quality at Scientific Food Testing services Pvt Ltd,Aachi Masala Foods Pvt Ltd Chennai. He delivered a lecture “Career Perspectives in Food Microbiology”
  • Birth anniversary of popular Microbiologists in the history was celebrated by the students of under graduate and post graduates on Alexander Fleming on 30th august 2019. Competitions such as Drawing, Quiz, poster presentation, essay writing, debates, skit agar art, crossword, fun on Fleming were conducted.

INTER DEPARTMENT COMPETITION IN COLLABORATION WITH PLACEMENT CELL

The Department of Microbiology in collaboration with Placement Cell organized an Interdepartmental competition on Concept Painting. Participants used eco friendly scraps. The event was judged by Dr.V.C. Shanthi lakshmi Dean Academics & Dr.Apitha Sapapathy Dean- Students and the prizes were distributed by Ms.RajyashriIraianbu, Director, Placement& Training.

INTERNSHIP

  • Students of II M.Sc. Microbiology attended summer internship for microbiologists – 2019 on Model Approaches in Microbial Bio prospecting Organized by Centre for drug Discovery and development, Col. Dr. Jeppiar Research Park, Sathyabama Institute of Science and technology .
  • Six students of II M.Sc. Microbiology attended Internship on Microbial sampling and Testing of food, water, swab under standards – Food-IS:5404:1984, Water-IS:1622:1981, Swab-IS: 18593:2004 in Parikshan Labs, Guindy, Chennai .
  • Students of II M.Sc. Microbiology attended Internship on Production department of Britannia – training program of Bread Processing in Qualitie Foods Pvt Ltd, Chennai.
  • Six students of II M.Sc. Microbiology attended internship on quality control conducted by TamilNadu Co-operative Milk Producers Federation Limited (TCMPF)Aavin, Ambattur, Chennai .

  • G.S.Thenmozhi II M.Sc Microbiology attended International Conference on “Emerging trends in Microbiology and Biotechnology and won 1st prize in poster presentation organized by the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Apollo Arts and Science college, Chennai .
  • Students of II M.Sc. Microbiology attended a workshop on “Academic and research facilities in biotechnology”, School of Bioengineering, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur.
  • M. Sc Microbiology students participated in Workshop “Microscopy and Photomicrography” organised by the department of microbiology, D. G. Vaishnav college.

PAPER PRESENTATION

  • Six students of II M.Sc. Applied Microbiology participated and presented papers and posters on 17th IAAM Annual Conference on “Microbiology in the New Millennium” organised jointly by Department of Biotechnology, School of Bio and Chemical Engineering, Kalasalingam Academy of Research & Education and IAAM .
  • Indu, Thenmozhi, Keerthanaof II M.Sc Applied Microbiology presented papers on 17th IAAM Annual Conference on “Microbiology in the New Millennium”organised jointly by Department of Biotechnology, School of Bio and Chemical Engineering, Kalasalingam Academy of Research & Education and IAAM.

Dr. J. Neena Priya, Dr. G. Krishnaveni and Dr. C. Banu Rekha were awarded Ph.D. in the academic year 2019.

Dr.V.Nithyakalyani published two research papers titled “Heavy metal tolerance of indigenous microsymbionts of Arachis hypogea” and “Potential uses of indigenous Rhizobial biofertilizers for cultivation of groundnut plant – a short mini review” inInternational Journal of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, October 2019 & December 2019 with the impact factor of 4.982

Dr. J. NeenaPriya published researchpapers titled “Growth Medium optimization for calcite precipitation using Response Surface Methodology” inInternational Journal of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, December 2019 with the impact factor of 4.982.
