History

Neptune Studios Private Limited was established in June 1946 and later underwent a name change to Sathya Studios Private Limited in November 1956. The company primarily focused on leasing its movie production facilities to motion picture producers. Situated in the heart of Chennai along the banks of the Adyar River, the property was formerly owned by the Nawab of Arcot and known as "Amir Bhag," serving as the entrance to the city of Madras. This site was historically significant, witnessing the Battle of Adyar in October 1746, leading to the formation of the Madras Regiment of the British Indian Army.

The founders of Neptune Studios acquired this property in the early 1940s and established the movie production studio. Over nearly fifty years, the premises served as a shooting location and bore witness to several pivotal events that influenced the political history of Tamil Nadu, previously referred to as Madras State.

In 1996, the management of the private company decided to transform the premises into a women's college, dedicated to the memory of the late Chief Minister Bharat Ratna Dr. MG Ramachandran and his wife, Smt. Janaki Ramachandran. The college was named "Dr. MGR-Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women." The establishment of Dr. MGR – Janaki College in 1996 was the result of dedicated efforts by Dr. Latha Rajendran and other well-wishers. Since then, the mission of Dr. MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women has been to provide higher education, empowering women. Starting with 70 students in 1996, the college has now grown to nearly 4000 students. The faculty has expanded from a dozen members to over 150, offering over 20 undergraduate and post graduate job oriented courses across different disciplines. All of this remarkable progress in just 27 years stands as a testament to their immense pride, hard work, passion, and perseverance. The institution has been accredited by NAAC in 2007 and reaccredited in 2012. Renowned scientist, visionary, and former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, visited the campus in 2012. The bronze statue of Dr. M.G. Ramachandran was unveiled on the college campus by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in 2019.

Currently the college is under the able leadership of the Principal Dr. R. Manimekalai and her team efficiently guided by the Chairman, Dr. Kumar Rajendran.
