Biochemistry

INCEPTION

The Department of Biochemistry was instituted in 1996.

OBJECTIVE

  • B.Sc. Biochemistry is an inter-disciplinary subject fulfilling the need for basic as well as applied aspects of biology. Biochemists focus on the role, function, and structure of biomolecules. This course emphasizes on the biological processes which take place in cells and organisms. 
  • It prepares the student to become entrepreneur, teacher, researcher and to equip themselves to the future needs along with the basic and applied knowledge of modern biology and in turn contribute to the welfare of the society.
  • In order to incorporate values beside classroom teaching the students are exposed to ample opportunities like, interaction with leading industries, project work, participation in debate, seminar, quiz, paper presentation etc.

    DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES

    Bridge course

    A Bridge Course is offered to the 1 year Undergraduate students to introduce the course. The syllabus pattern, core subjects, electives and soft skills are explained to the students. Facilities available on campus for curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are introduced to the students. Details regarding career opportunities after graduation, competitive exam training and placement opportunities are explained.

    CERTIFICATE COURSE

    A certificate course on Computational Biology for a duration of 30 hours is offered in the 3rd semester

    SEMINARS, CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS

  • Workshop on “Stem Cell Technology” from 25-07-2022 to 08-08-2022 was organized by the department. Dr.Nithya Kalayani, Chief Scientist, Apollo group of hospitals, Founder & Director, Cell2cure therapies and iGN Private ltd at AcaDiCell Pvt Ltd, Crescent Innovation and Incubation Centre was the resource person.
  • National webinar on “NxtGenSci-2k22” was held on 12-09-2022. Dr. Mukesh Doble, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, IIT-Madras Chennai, Dr. Venkata Suresh Chinni, Faculty of Medicine, Bioscience and Nursing, MAHSA University, Malaysia, Dr. P. Karthe, Professor and Head, Department of Crystallography and Biophysics, University of Madras Dr. V. Umashankar, Scientist, ICMR-NIRT, Chennai were the resource persons.
  • GUEST LECTURES

  • A guest lecture on "PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY" was held on 01-09-2022. Ms. G. Shoba, Guest Lecturer, Department of Biotechnology, DG Vaishnav College, Chennai was the guest speaker.
  • A guest lecture on “Awareness on PCOD” was held on 29-09-2022. The resource person was Dr. M kanchana, MBBS, MD (OG), FRM Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Kanna Centre for Assisted Reproduction, Mylapore, Chennai.

  • CLUB ACTIVITIES

    The following club activities were conducted during the academic year 2022-23

  • Green Health Club inauguration by Dr. G Kudiyarasu on 17-08-22. He insisted on the importance of recycling of paper, planting more trees and sensitized the students on waste disposal and minimal waste.
  • “Photography competition” was planned on 12.08.2022 the theme ‘Nature rejoicing’ on the “World Photography Day”.
  • Every year National Nutrition Week (NNW) is observed on the 1st week of September, GHC organizes “NUTRIFEST - eat healthy, be nutrition wealthy,” Cooking competition - “No Fire - Nutrition Hire” for the I Biochemistry, Modeling Competition - “BIOMODELS” for II Biochemistry and PPT presentation - “Healthy Presenters”, to create awareness on nutrition among students.

Bioinformatics & CTM has presented a paper on Identification of mirna…..promising therapeutics for male breast cancer in the International conference on Advances in Biotechnology-“Research, Innovations and Entrepreneurial Venues- An Outlook (ICAB-2022)” organized by PG Department of Biotechnology, DG Vaishnav College, Chennai on 20-10-2022 and won II Prize
  • M Vaishnavi & B Raksha from II B.Sc. Biochemistry have completed 2 NPTEL online certification Courses on Stress Management and Psychology of everyday
  • NPTEL website has included II Biochemistry student M. Vaishnavi under Topper's list and Topper's feedback
