INCEPTION
The Department of Microbiology was instituted in the year 1996.
OBJECTIVE
- The Department of Microbiology is a community of scholars committed to encompass some of the most exciting areas of contemporary microbiology and prepare graduate students in different areas of biological sciences.
- Our curriculum is designed to educate students in a variety of important microbiological disciplines, as well as to promote skills and competencies that have enduring value beyond the class room.

Library has 286 books, to fulfil students’ requirement for the prescribed syllabus covering all the aspects of the subject with the multiple copies for their convenience.
LAB FACILITIES
- The strength of the department lies in a well equipped lab and its comprehensive laboratory utilizing advanced technologies and equipped processes.
- The department has well furnished air conditioned lab with Computer System, ELISA Reader, PCR, UVSpectrophotometer, UV Transilluminator Soxhlet Apparatus, Phase Contrast Microscope& Dark Field Microscope etc.

SEMINAR
- National Seminar The Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Bioinformatics and Clinical Trial Management organized a National Seminar on “Towards Healthy Living” on 9th September 2019.It was inaugurated by Mr. C. Jayaprahash, Technical Officer, Food Engineering and Packaging Division Defence Food Research Laboratory, Mysuru.
GUEST LECTURE:
- Dr. T. Bakyaraj, CEO Nero Lab India Infection Control Specialist delivered a talk on “Hospital Infection Control” .
- Mr. Sam Bristow, Deputy Manager Quality at Scientific Food Testing services Pvt Ltd, Aachi Masala Foods Pvt Ltd Chennai. He delivered a lecture “Career Perspectives in Food Microbiology” .
INDUSTRIAL VISIT
Students of II B.Sc Microbiology visited Adyar poonga on 23rd July 2019They learned about mangrove ecosystem, desalination using Mangrove plants, uses of medicinal trees and its application

As another feather to its crown, the department of Microbiology is proud to have a Journal Club “EUPRO”, a platform to exchange ideas to experience translational moments and annually releases a newsletter “SukshmaJivaVidya” which is a compilation of academic activities & ongoing research projects of the department and scientific events across the globe.
ASSOCIATION ACTIVITY
- Scientific talk was given by Dr. T. Bakyaraj, CEO Nero Lab India Infection Control Specialist delivered a talk on “Hospital Infection Control”
Association activities
- The department of microbiology inaugurated Microbiology association meet “Microcosm”. The inaugural address was given by Mr. Sam Bristow, Deputy Manager Quality at Scientific Food Testing services Pvt Ltd, Aachi Masala Foods Pvt Ltd Chennai. He delivered a lecture “Career Perspectives in Food Microbiology”
- Birth anniversary of popular Microbiologists in history was celebrated by under graduates while post graduates celebrated Alexander Fleming. Competitions such as Drawing, Quiz, poster presentation, essay writing, debates, skit agar art, crossword, fun on Fleming were conducted.
- Sergei Winogradsky’s Birth anniversary was celebrated on the 6th September 2019. Competitions such as Frame names, what’s new, Crazy Sradsky, T-Shirt painting, Model display were conducted.
- Loius Pasteur’s Birth anniversary was celebrated on 19th December 2019. Competitions such as article writing, Research paper presentation, Quiz and crosswords were conducted.
INTER DEPARTMENT COMPETITION IN COLLABORATION WITH PLACEMENT CELL
The Department of Microbiology in collaboration with Placement Cell organized an Interdepartmental competition on Concept Painting. Participants used eco friendly scraps. The event was judged by Dr.V.C. Shanthi lakshmi Dean Academics & Dr..Apitha Sapapathy Dean- Students and the prizes were distributed by Ms.Rajyashri Iraianbu, Director, Placement & Training.
Internship
Students of II B.Sc. Microbiology attended summer internship for microbiologists – 2019 on “Bioinstrumentation” Organized by Centre for drug Discovery and development, Col. Dr. Jeppiar Research Park, Sathyabama Institute of Science and technology .
STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT:
- Students of III B.Sc Microbiology attended “Workshop on Mushroom cultivation and Biofertilizer production”on 28th August 2019 by Mohamed Sathak College of Arts & Science, Chennai.
- Yogalakshmi and Keerthana of III B.Sc Microbiology attended workshop on “Digital Banking- Awareness”on 25th January 2020 by Cyber Society of India, Chennai
- Ishwarya, Surbahi, Ashwini, Sangeetha and Jenifer of II B. Sc Microbiology participated in a seminar conducted by CLRI on 28/2/2019 on National Science Day.
- Reshma of II B.Sc Microbiology participated in the competition organized by IQAC for World Disaster Day – Disaster Management and won first prize
- Students of II B.Sc Microbiology participated in Intercollegiate competitions events like Channel surfing, surprise event, poster presentation, RJ hunt and Adapt tune organized by the Department of Advanced Zoology JBAS college
- Ashwini of II B. Sc Microbiology released a YouTube video on August 2019 on the topic "Kurundhogaiyil kurippidappadum kadhal pattriya kurippu - ariviyal nutpam".https://youtu.be/jLc4RFAeNZg
- Navalakshmi of II B.Sc participated in Tamil drama on vaazhnthu kaattuvom in intercollegiate competition conducted by tamil department of"Sri Guru Shanthi Vidya Jain Women's College" Veppampatti and won first prize.

FACULTY ACHEIVEMENT
Dr. J. Neena Priya, Dr. G. Krishnaveni and Dr. C. Banu Rekha were awarded Ph.D.in the academic year 2019.
PUBLICATIONS
Dr.V.Nithyakalyani published two research papers titled “Heavy metal tolerance of indigenous microsymbionts of Arachis hypogea” and “Potential uses of indigenous Rhizobial biofertilizers for cultivation of groundnut plant – a short mini review” in International Journal of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, October 2019 & December 2019 with the impact factor of 4.982 .
Dr. J. NeenaPriya published researchpapers titled “Growth Medium optimization for calcite precipitation using Response Surface Methodology” in International Journal of Engineering, Applied Science and Technology, December 2019 with the impact factor of 4.982.

Ms. L. Aswini attended 17th IAAM Annual Conference on “Microbiology in the New Millennium” jointly organized by Department of Biotechnology, School of Bio and Chemical Engineering, Kalasalingam Academy of Research & Education and Indian Association of Applied Microbiologists .
